Rockin' Penguins

This was another lesson inspired by the winter concert this year!  What says winter concert more than some cute penguins playing electric guitars?  So my second graders got to work!

Step 1:  The penguin
For sake of time, I made templates for the outline of the penguin and the arms.  The students traced these on their paper but were still responsible for drawing the inside lines (defining the black and white areas & the face)
The students then painting the black and orange area.  We let the white paper be the white of the penguin's body but you could always choose to have them paint this part or make the penguin more realistic looking by adding some grey shadows in the white.
* The arms are done separately so that when the entire picture gets assembled the arms can be arranged to appear as though they are holding the guitar

Step 2:  The Guitars
For the guitars, I had the students listen to two songs.  One was done with acoustic guitar and the other with electric.  This gave the students an idea of what the difference in the two kinds of guitars was like.
Then the students were given to options Guitar shape A and Guitar shape B  Of course they were encouraged to alter these versions as much as they would like to.  But to get them started I did a draw along on the board of the two types of guitars and the students followed along at their seats.

The guitars were then designed with black sharpies and painted using metallic watercolors!

Step 3:  The Mountains

The mountains were made out of sheet music to go along with the theme and glued onto cool colored construction paper.  Q-tips and white paint were used to create snow.

Step 4:  Assembling
The students cut out all their pieces and laid them out on their backgrounds before gluing.  They were encouraged to make sure it was how they wanted it before starting to glue.

All their hardwork paid off!  More pictures coming soon!
