Aargh Matey!

As summer approached, I wanted to do a themed lesson, but not the typical fish or beach scene So I decided to do PIRATES with my first graders!!  We read two different pirate stories.  We talked about how Pirates' lives are different than our own lives. The first graders all thought it sounded like the Pirates had a lot of fun!

We talked about all the different things the Pirates were wearing; eye patches, hooks, bandanas etc.  The students went back to their desks to begin drawing their Pirates.  While the students were working on their pirates (No Stick figures!!!) I called students up to the painting table to do their water.  Students painted their entire paper blue, and then took a plastic fork and scraped in wave designs, this created nice movement in the background.

The next step was making the Boat.  Students were given brown construction paper and we drew the boat together.  I explained to the students that Pirates on a Ship were kind of like a family or a team.  THey usually had a symbol on their flag that was specific to them like skulls!  The students were to pick a symbol for their pirate ships and draw it on colored paper for their Ship flags.

Next, the students used the scrap brown construction paper to make their flag poles.  STudents took all their pieces- THeir flags, poles, boat and pirates and arranged them on their ocean.
This step is important because otherwise the pirates would be glued on front of the boat and not inside of the boat.  I stressed to the first graders that the boat will be the last item they glue.
First they must glue down their pirates with LITTLE DOTS OF GLUE.  Next, glue the poles on top of their flags, and then their flags to the ocean.  Now, it is time for the boat!
The last part we did was the Treasure Island.  This was a good addition to the lesson because it taught students how to draw a box.  I stood at the board and drew a treasure chest step by step as the students followed me.  This method seemed to work pretty well.

While the students colored their treasure chests in, I called students up to make their sand island.  The kids really enjoyed this.  I was very surprised to find that some of them had never touched sand before!

I love these!
